China’s Gen Z investors are turning fund managers into social media stars

On a fan community page on Chinese social media platform Weibo, hundreds of users have posted comments and pictures, some covered in little red hearts, to express their admiration for a star they affectionately call Kun Kun. “Kun Kun flies bravely, iKun will always follow him; Kun Kun never gets old, and will remain a blue-chip till the end,” some users wrote alongside the picture. “Kun Kun,” whose full name is Zhang Kun, is neither a pop star nor actor. Instead, he is one of China’s most prominent fund managers who oversees around 120 billion yuan ($18.6 billion) in assets at E Fund Management, an established Chinese asset management firm. Zhang’s followers, who label themselves “iKun,” (“i” is a homophone for the Chinese word love), have also created accounts on Weibo posing as his “global fan clubs.” “Kun Kun, I would like to accompany you for many, many years,” a follower wrote. “Let’s witness both the bull and bear markets, but still return with young hearts.”

Germany has to pay Microsoft for failing to upgrade from Windows 7

Last winter, Microsoft announced that Windows 7 would reach its  end-of-life  on January 14th, 2020. In other words, the company will not be releasing any updates for the operating system -- even crucial security patches -- after that date. The public had nearly a year to make the move to Windows 10, but Germany's government didn't upgrade in time. According to German newspaper  Handelsblatt , the German Federal Ministry has at least 33,000 computers still running Windows 7 and, as a result, will have to pay Microsoft about $887,000 in extended security update fees. Microsoft offers extended security updates to enterprise and business clients, but at a hefty price --  ZDNet  reported that the company will charge $50 per machine during the first year of end-of-life support and that the price will increase after each additional year. When an organization has tens of thousands of computers, those fees add up quickly. Maintaining thousands of computers is a tough job --

Japan planning to launch 6G by 2030: Report

Japan  is reportedly planning a comprehensive strategy for "post-5G" ( 6G )  technology  by 2030 and it is believed that the new technology will be 10-times faster than the current 5G. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan will set up a government-civilian research society in January under the chairmanship of the University of Tokyo Goshinjin, and under the direct supervision of the General Affairs Minister Takao Sanae, GizmoChaina reported on Monday. Additionally, people from NTT and Toshiba will also be invited to discuss 6G performance goals and policy support by June. The government will promote the development of 6G technology. US-based investment banking and financial service company, Goldman Sachs, has forecast a hefty 200 million 5G  smartphone  shipments globally in 2020. The new predicted value is about 20 times more than the sales figure of 2019. According to estimates, there will be about 1 million new 5G base stations in China i

Anti-5G group plans global protest

A group of activists against the expansion of  5G  wireless  technology  is planning a protest in New York City to warn people about its negative effects. The U.S. government and  cell service providers  -- particularly the  Federal Communications Commission  (FCC) and  AT&T  -- have been making strides to catch up with  China 's ever-growing  5G technology , which is expected to be the new  global  wireless standard since it will deliver significantly faster and more precise internet connections to users than the 4G technology the U.S. uses today. But some activists are worried about the "biological and  health  effects of electromagnetic fields" related to wireless technology, saying it can lead to radication that causes cancer, and a group called the  NYC 5G Wake-Up Call  is taking its concerns to the public on Jan. 25, the Global Day of Protest to Stop 5G on Earth and in Space. Palm oil import curbs: Why Malaysia doesn't want to 'retaliate' against India

NEW DELHI: Malaysian PM  Mahathir Mohamad tried to play the 'pity' card on Monday by saying that his country was  too small to retaliate against India , after curbs on import of  palm oil were introduced by New Delhi, ostensibly targeting Kuala Lumpur for  criticising India on domestic issues such as CAA and Kashmir. India is also reportedly unhappy with Malaysia's refusal to revoke permanent resident status for controversial Indian Islamic preacher  Zakir Naik, who has lived in Malaysia for three years and faces charges of money laundering and hate speech in India. "We are too small to take retaliatory action. We have to find ways and means to overcome that," the Malaysian PM told reporters. Muscle flexing India, the world's largest edible oil buyer, has so far only targeted  palm oil imports  , officially to safeguard its domestic industry though the hardest hit will be Malaysia, since India is its biggest buyer — accounting for nearly a quarter

Upcoming 2020 Google Pixel Buds Gen 2 spotted in Bluetooth SIG listing

The 2020 Pixel Buds were  revealed back in October  during the Made by Google event 2019 that was primarily held to launch the Pixel 4. Google stated that were slated for a 2020 launch and now a listing has been spotted in the Bluetooth SIG, confirming its imminent arrival. At the Made by Google 2019 event, Google only showcased dummy models of the Pixel Buds 2, essentially highlighting the new design of the wireless earbuds. The  original Pixel Buds  were announced back in 2017, but it was not of the truly wireless type of earphones, instead it has a wire connecting the two earbuds together. The new design makes the Pixel Buds 2 truly wireless with a much more compact carrying case. Being a dummy model, the sound quality of the earbuds could not be determined. However, at $179 (Rs. 12,790 approx.), it can be expected to have a similar acoustic performance to the Apple AirPods or Sony’s wireless earbuds. The listing does point out in its description the presence of an ambient vent, sim

Huawei’s answer to life after Google Maps? TomTom

Image Credits:  Getty Images Losing access to Google software and services understandably threw Huawei for a loop. The Chinese hardware giant has clearly been working on a contingency plan to deal with the loss of access to things like Android and the Play Store, but Google’s offering formed so much of the devices’ software core — as they do so many of its competitors. Huawei just lined up a pretty big name in its attempts to rebuild a competitive software suite. Dutch mapping giant TomTom has agreed to provide access to its navigation, mapping and traffic information. The two companies finalized a deal this week,  per Reuters , letting Huawei use that information to build its own proprietary apps. TomTom confirmed the deal, but declined to offer additional information. The move comes as the mapping company has taken a step back from hardware offerings in favor of monetizing its software services. Given Huawei’s pretty massive footprint in the global smartphone market, this

US case against Huawei’s Meng Wanzhou is ‘fiction’, say lawyers

The accusations of sanctions busting against Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou have been dismissed by her lawyers as “fiction” at the start of a legal hearing in Canada in which she is fighting extradition to the United States. Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of the technology conglomerate, and eldest daughter of its founder Ren Zhengfei, is wanted by US authorities for alleged fraud in trying to circumvent Washington’s sanctions against Iran. She made no comment as she rushed past protesters waving “Free Meng” and “Trump stop bullying us” placards outside the special court in Vanouver on Monday. Inside, she sat following the proceedings with the help of an interpreter as her attorneys used their opening remarks to reject the  fraud charges against her  on the basis that her alleged conduct was not illegal at the time in Canada. Her defense lawyer, Richard Peck, told the court that the central issue was “double criminality”, the legal concept that Meng’s extradition to the US req

Hacker Leaks Info of 5 Lakh IoT Devices Including Amazon Owned Ring Security Cameras

Amazon owned Ring security cameras (Image: Amazon) A hacker has leaked usernames and passwords of over five lakh servers, routers and Internet of Things (IoT) devices on the Dark Web which can be used to install malware on Internet-connected devices at home or at work. Attackers could use those credentials to gain remote access to the affected devices, like we have seen recently in some home cameras and devices, including Amazon-owned Ring security cameras. According to reports, the list of Telnet credentials has been published on a popular hacking forum that includes each device's IP address, along with a username and password for the Telnet service. Telnet is one of the earliest remote login protocols on the Internet. It is a client-server protocol that provides the user with a terminal session to the remote host from the telnet client application. "Hackers scan the internet to build bot lists, and then use them to connect to the devices and install malware," said the r

Samsung has the cheapest 2TB SSD right now but it uses a controversial technology

1TB is the sweet spot as far as solid state drives are concerned, with the  cheapest 1TB SSD  routinely available for around $80.  But if you need more capacity, it's often worth looking at a 2TB drive (unless you have enough space and connectors to plug in two separate 1TB drives). Such items are falling in price rapidly and at least five models - from Samsung, Team Group, Crucial, Micron, and Gloway - can be purchased for under $200 (all from Newegg). Samsung is by far the most well known of the vendors, but its  860 QVO drive  (MZ-76Q2T0B/AM) is based on QLC technology, which might raise eyebrows Samsung 2TB 860 QVO -  $199.95 at Newegg A great deal for those looking for affordable capacity with good performance and endurance. Samsung is one of a handful of SSD manufacturers that produces its own chips and as such can deliver better value for money, and the 2TB Samsung 860 QVO is the cheapest option per TB. In a nutshell, QLC-based SSD tend to have lower endurance an
